HBZVN: Wulan, you are the first Indonesian woman to organize an independent designer show in Paris. Your contribution to the promotion of independent designers on the international stage is widely recognized. What does this achievement mean to you, and how has it influenced your life? Which aspects of fashion are especially important for you to share with the public?

WULAN S. HARYONO: This achievement is incredibly meaningful to me, as it has allowed me to facilitate independent designers in showcasing their collections on an international stage, ultimately gaining exposure from fashion media and industry professionals. This has opened doors for their collections to be marketed globally. This accomplishment has deeply influenced my life, inspiring me to continue supporting independent designers and increasing their visibility, particularly in Paris, France. The most crucial aspects of fashion, in my opinion, are authenticity, sustainability, and ethics.

For the first few years, Fashion Forward was dedicated to promoting Asian designers. Having successfully organized several showcases for Asian designers, we recognized the need to expand our reach and celebrate the global diversity of design. Over the past few years, we have evolved to curate a platform that unites independent designers from all corners of the world, fostering a more inclusive and interconnected design community. Fashion Forward has now expanded to the Cannes Film Festival, providing red carpet exposure for designers. Additionally, we are launching a New York Trade Show where designers can sell their pieces B2B and connect with buyers.

HBZVN: Fashion Forward, the company you founded, serves as the perfect platform for emerging talent. You have helped over 200 designers showcase their collections on the international stage. Which success story among your participants has inspired you the most?

WULAN S. HARYONO: One designer whose journey truly inspires me is Gavel Paris. Their relentless pursuit of excellence and commitment to sustainability are remarkable. Gavel has used their platform to raise awareness about environmental issues and advocate for ethical fashion practices. Their success is a testament to the power of creativity, hard work, and a strong belief in one’s vision.

Stories like these fuel our passion at Fashion Forward. Gavel is an exceptionally creative designer whose high-end ready-to-wear debut at Paris Fashion Week was a resounding success. Since then, they have consistently expanded, opening boutiques and preparing to present their second collection with us in March 2025 for an exclusive solo show.

HBZVN: Your journey in fashion began with your studies at LaSalle College and in France. How did these formative years shape your perspective on the industry and your commitment to promoting Independent designers?

WULAN S. HARYONO: My time at LaSalle College International Fashion Business and in France was pivotal in shaping my understanding of the global fashion industry. I was exposed to diverse cultures, innovative design concepts, and the intricacies of the fashion business. These experiences exposed me to the rich diversity of cultures, design aesthetics, and the global fashion landscape.

I was inspired by the creativity and passion of independent designers who often struggled to gain recognition on a global stage. I saw a gap in the market and felt a strong desire to create a platform that would empower these talented individuals and give them the opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience.

My studies also instilled in me a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, innovation, and the power of fashion to express individuality and cultural identity. I realized that by supporting independent designers, I could contribute to a more inclusive and diverse fashion industry that celebrates originality and authenticity.

HBZVN: Your shows are renowned for their creativity and attention to detail. Where do you draw inspiration for such unique events?

WULAN S. HARYONO: My inspiration comes from a blend of cultural influences, contemporary trends, and a desire to push boundaries. Collaboration plays a key role in my creative process. I work closely with designers, artists, and performers to bring my vision to life. By merging their unique perspectives with my own, we craft innovative and unforgettable events. Above all, I firmly believe that the success of any event hinges on having the best possible team.

HBZVN: What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What hobbies help you recharge?

WULAN S. HARYONO: I love spending time with my family, often heading to the beach to relax and enjoy each other’s company. One of my favourite pastimes is horseback riding. There’s something incredibly soothing about the rhythm of a horse’s movements and the sense of freedom as you ride through open fields. It’s a wonderful way to clear my mind and recharge, to release emotions and stay active. These activities help me relax, reflect, and find inspiration for my creative work.

HBZVN: Fashion is influential, but trends are fleeting. What seven values in your life remain constant and unchanging?

WULAN S. HARYONO: While fashion trends may come and go, certain values guide my life: Integrity, creativity, endurance, empathy, passion, gratitude, and kindness are the core values that guide my life.

I strive to act with honesty and sincerity in all my endeavors, embracing innovation and thinking outside the box. I tackle challenges with determination and perseverance, always seeking to understand and respond to the needs of others. I pursue my goals with enthusiasm and dedication, appreciating the blessings in my life. And I treat everyone with respect and compassion.
