Kristina Song is not your typical 19-year-old. As a student at Otis College of Art and Design, she channels her passions for fashion, art, and gaming into a life filled with creativity. Her passion for art began with school studio classes, where experimenting with materials like acrylics, mixed media, and charcoal sparked her love for creating.
Art in every form
“I especially thrived in art studio classes,” Kristina shares. “These classes gave me the chance to experiment with different techniques and materials, letting me develop my skills and find my own style.” Her favorite medium is mixed media. “Using materials like plastic, paper, metal, and glass allows me to explore different textures and create unexpected combinations that open new perspectives,” she explains. Sustainability is also central to her work. “I often incorporate recycled or found objects into my work, giving them a second life and purpose.”
One of her proudest creations uses black wires, plastic straws, and mirrors. “This piece is particularly meaningful to me because it was inspired by the contrast between gaming architecture and real-world buildings—how we, as creators, have the power to shape the realities we envision,” Kristina Song says.
Gaming meets art
When she’s not immersed in art, Kristina Song is a fierce competitor in the video game Valorant. “My favorite game right now is Valorant,” she shares. “I love it because it combines the thrill of competition with the opportunity to improve by analyzing my gameplay mistakes.” She finds inspiration in the game’s unique art and immersive world-building. “The game’s art and music have a distinctive style that sets it apart from other gaming platforms, making it instantly recognizable,” she explains.
She also loves how gaming fosters creativity. “Even games like Minecraft encourage creativity by allowing players to design both the interiors and exteriors of homes—something they might not be able to replicate in real life. This kind of creative freedom can be relaxing, as players become absorbed in bringing their ideas to life,” the young student reflects.
Creative storytelling
Kristina Song approaches visual storytelling by building atmospheres that complement her focal subjects. “I create a story of art and visuals by creating an artwork that has a background that complements the characters or centerpieces in the piece, basically having an atmosphere that draws the viewer in,” she says.
She further explains, “A simple glance by the viewer looking at the gesture or the color choices in the work should be able to tell a story more than words could in seconds, speaking a compelling narrative of the visuals. My approach to artworks is to just lay out big ideas and emotions, then slowly add in details.” That is done by setting the mood of the artwork first with a base color, then adding in characters or other elements that make the layers of art being added on come alive.
Personal style & future dreams
Her love for art extends into her fashion sense, blending black and white for timeless, elegant looks. “My favorite colors are black and white—either individually or combined, they never fail to create a timeless contrast,” she says. “I use black to style more edgy, sleek, and sophisticated looks for a night out, while white gives off a feminine, clean vibe, which I often gravitate towards.”
Looking ahead, Kristina dreams of launching her own fashion brand. “My dreams after graduation is to definitely gain experiences in the fashion industry and to start my own innovative fashion brand,” she shares. “I’m very excited to work towards what I want to become, which is focusing on outfit silhouettes and manipulating fabrics in ways that would be the most flattering on one’s body.”
With her sketchbook in one hand and a game controller in the other, Kristina Song is shaping her creative world—one design and epic match at a time.
